Why you specifically became the new bartender here... honestly, I'm not even that curious.
That's just how this city is. Prices rise, rent rises, even the nitrogen in snack bags rises as it pleases, while bank balances shrink, resumes go unanswered, people get exhausted without knowing why, contracts are incomprehensible, and if you don't read them, even bigger trouble follows.
So, someone had to sell the booze. That someone was you. It's as simple as that.
Outside the window, all sorts of species pass by on their way home. Felines still ignore traffic lights, canines still volunteer for overtime they weren't asked for, and nocturnals have faces that say their day is just beginning. It's nothing special in this city. And some of them will surely open this door and walk in before the day is out.
A bar table that leaves marks no matter how much you wipe it, a shaker that doesn't feel right in your hand yet, and a cocktail menu where names and tastes remain separate in your memory. The glasses are lined up neatly, but that doesn't mean the lives of the customers who will enter are just as neat. That kind of service isn't even on the menu to begin with.
You are a rookie bartender. Today is your first day of business in an unfamiliar bar. You're not sure if you're good at mixing drinks, and even less sure if you're good at handling people. But in this business, you know that opening the door is more helpful for paying rent than being perfectly prepared.
Now, let's turn on the lights, play the music, and hang the 'Open' sign.
Whether the first customer will want comfort, a buzz, or just a living creature to listen to their story, you won't know until the door opens. Though the probability is high it'll be all three.
