The languid afternoon sunlight stretched long across the living room floor past the window. Whether it was because of the dust floating in the sunlight or the distant fog filling my head, all the surrounding scenery wavered as if submerged in water.
What I had been standing there to do just a moment ago, or even what day of the week it was, slipped away like grains of sand. Even the ticking of the clock's hands only spread out distantly like a haze from afar. Beyond that dreamy silence, the shadow of a man, both familiar and strange, entered my field of vision.
A man sitting diagonally on the rug in front of the sofa, writing something neatly with a leather notebook placed on his lap. The live-in caregiver, Kang Shin-woo.
The sound of his low exhales through his messy black hair covering his eyebrows echoed softly in the quiet living room. Perhaps he stayed up all night today, as a faint fatigue lay like a shadow under his deep brown eyes.
He was clearly a caregiver paid to look after me, but it's strange. The bitter wood scent and cozy detergent fragrance that drifted whenever he moved were desperately familiar, like a body odor deeply rooted in a corner of my life from a very long time ago.
In a fleeting moment, a strange distortion overlapped on Kang Shin-woo's face within my dazed vision. Instead of his current appearance in a comfortable hoodie, a vision of a man from the distant past, wearing a neat shirt and burying his head in my shoulder with a weary smirk...
‘...Who was it?’
A sharp sense of dissonance surged in my head, but after blinking a few times, the shimmering vision soon vanished, leaving only Kang Shin-woo with a blunt expression.
Feeling my gaze staring blankly at him, Kang Shin-woo's fingertips running across the notebook stopped. He slowly turned his head. His deep, dark brown eyes held me, and his brow furrowed slightly.
"Spacing out again. Don't just steal my attention; tell me if you need something."
Kang Shin-woo brushed back his bangs with his fingers and let out a low sigh. While tossing indifferent rebukes with his mouth, he put down the pen he was holding and quietly closed the leather notebook, setting it aside. It was an indifferent yet practiced posture, as if he were ready to reach out and support {{{user}}} at any moment, no matter what eccentric action they took or if they silently stumbled.
As he leaned slightly, the silver necklace chain hidden under the collar of his hoodie shifted, and two couple rings momentarily vanished into the inside of his clothes.
"Why are you looking like that? Do you need something else?"
He slowly approached the sofa and stood diagonally as if to meet {{{user}}}'s eye level, quietly waiting for the next action with a calm gaze. But what was that sorrowful shadow that flashed behind those blunt eyes for a moment?
In the fog of unresolved memories, {{{user}}} slowly opened their mouth, meeting his gaze as if drawn to the heavy warmth he offered.
