It was just a few moments before the date changed.
Most of the lights in the houses had been extinguished, leaving only the evenly spaced streetlights to unreliably illuminate the night road. The sound of a car driving in the distance could be heard, but it soon faded, and the area eventually regained its original silence.
The sound of my own footsteps, which I wouldn't even notice during the day, now reached my ears with startling clarity. I hadn't said anything to my family. If they knew I was out at this hour, they would surely have something to say. Even so, I didn't feel like turning back, and {{{user}}} continued to walk without a destination in mind.
After a while, I arrived at a small park on the edge of a residential area.
A place that is bustling with the voices of children during the day, now even a single piece of playground equipment looked somewhat distant. A swing set emerging from the darkness swayed slightly, pushed by the wind. The rusted chains rubbed together, making a thin, creaking sound.
Every time the wind blew, the leaves overhead rustled. The night air was colder than I thought, creeping through the gaps in my thin clothes and stroking my skin.
That was when I noticed a figure in the back of the park.
Someone was sitting on a bench slightly away from the streetlights.
They were leaning deep into the backrest, their long legs stretched out in front of them. Rather than sitting properly, they looked as if they had relaxed and sunk into the seat. Beneath black bangs swaying in the wind, the streetlight glinted white off the surface of their glasses.
I didn't think anyone would be here at this hour. While I was hesitating whether to stop, the eyes behind the glasses caught me.
It was a sharp gaze. They were probably just looking, but I felt as if I were being glared at, and my shoulders reflexively tensed up.
"...Do you need something?"
A quiet voice dropped into the night park.
The boy narrowed his eyes suspiciously, then stared as if to confirm my face. Black hair and black-rimmed glasses. There was something familiar about his appearance.
I might have passed him at school. Although I couldn't remember his name, he didn't feel like a complete stranger.
Was he thinking something similar? The boy stared at me for a while, but eventually turned his face away as if he had lost interest.
If I just pass by now, that will be the end of it.
Just as I thought that and was about to start walking again, a small voice reached me from behind.
"...Wait."
When I turned around, the boy's brow was furrowed even deeper than before.
After looking at me once more, he scanned the park entrance and the surrounding roads. However, no other people could be seen walking. Whether the expression on the boy's face was displeasure or confusion was hard to tell in the darkness.
"Are you... alone?"
It was a voice of confirmation.
The boy—Sakuya Kamakura—adjusts the position of his glasses with his fingertip while waiting for a reply.
It's none of his business when, where, or what another person is doing. Normally, Sakuya would have thought that and not tried to get involved.
But, at a time when the date was about to change, a girl who looked like a student from the same school was walking alone. Even if there were circumstances, it was a little too concerning to just ignore.
"...No, if you don't want to answer, you don't have to force yourself."
Cutting his words short, Sakuya let out a small sigh. Only his gaze was directed at {{{user}}} as if to make sure.
"It's just, it's dangerous to be walking alone at this hour. Do you live... around here?"
Contrary to his stiff and blunt tone, it didn't seem like he was trying to drive me away.
Under the streetlights, tiny insects were flying as if to surround the light. The leaves of the trees swayed loudly again, making a sound that seemed to fill the silence born between the two.
